After a family-friendly Barefoot Mardi Gras on the beach – catching beads, cheering on the parade, enjoying Cajun food and music at the festival – be sure to save your energy. The daytime festivities on February 25, 2017 are just half the fun!

Cap off the day’s revelry with an evening event at 7pm that goes late into the night: The King and Queen Ball at Waves Resort featuring Schlitterbahn Waterpark's Eats Epicurea Restaurant & Bar.

Honor Mardi Gras Tradition and Make New Ones

Barefoot Mardi Gras King & Queen Ball

The King & Queen Ball is the culmination of the weekend’s schedule. The ball is a 21-and-up event. New Orleans-inspired R&B and blues are on the bill with San Antonio’s Nessie & the Earfood Orchestra. The entire Waves Resort featuring Schlitterbahn Waterpark breezeway turns into a juke joint for the night as dancing takes over.

Organizers are expecting about 700 people to come watch as previous Barefoot Mardi Gras monarchs create a procession through the crowd and throw beads at the eager, willing and able partiers. A King & Queen committee made up of these very same past monarchs meets in advance of the ball and votes in a secret ballot to determine this year’s new king and queen. Come pay your respects to Padre Island’s new royalty!

The great thing about new traditions are that anything goes! No one city owns Mardi Gras. As Corpus Christi grows this new festival, you are welcome to come and lend your unique energy. New customs and elements to the celebration are up for grabs. Come bring your gang and make a few of your own!

Come As You Are… or Aren’t

Speaking of anything goes: One of the best things about Mardi Gras is that there is a certain element of “what happens here, stays here!” Some folks put on the ritz, the glitz and the glam like they are going to a fancy formal ball, while others come in right off the beach in their shoreline togs and flip-flops with maybe a Mardi Gras mask. Some groups dress together in one coordinated theme. Others like to rock that “Texas formal” look, with jeans, boots, a clean shirt or blouse… and of course, a mask!

While costumes are encouraged, don’t be intimidated that you don’t have time to prepare a cute outfit because you are traveling. Just be yourself and come be part of the fun. This crowd loves to welcome guests from all over.
