Sustainable Practices
Texas Oyster Farming
Oyster enthusiasts flock to Corpus Christi restaurants for their favorite bivalve on a half shell, and these oysters are protected in a safe and sustainable manner through oyster farming. Oyster farming is a process in which oysters are bred and raised for their pearls, shells, and inner organ tissue, which is eaten. Fun fact: The first Oyster Mariculture Permit ever issued in Texas belongs to Brad Lomax, the founder of the Water Street Restaurants. In 2020, he and his business partners created the 8-acre Texas Oyster Ranch in Copano Bay in Aransas County, which is also the first oyster farm in Texas.
Sea Turtle Releases
Every year, thousands of endangered Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtles are nested and hatched in Corpus Christi, then released into the Gulf of Mexico. The Padre Island National Seashore is home to approximately 60% of the Kemp’s Ridley nests found in the United States, with most hatchling releases taking place between May and August. The release dates vary as nesting dates are unpredictable, but if you’re visiting Corpus Christi in the summer months, the chances are high that you’ll be able to attend one of nature’s coolest, unique Corpus Christi experiences. Texas State Aquarium Sustainable Practices
The Texas State Aquarium's "Going Green" program, initiated in 2009 and led by its operations team, embodies a commitment to sustainability across all facets of its operations. Through innovative energy initiatives such as automatic light switches and the implementation of fluorescent and LED lighting, the Aquarium significantly reduces its carbon footprint. Furthermore, the adoption of electric golf carts and the installation of a solar array funded by Green Mountain Energy exemplify its dedication to eco-friendly practices.
Recycling plays a pivotal role, with staff and guests encouraged to participate through conveniently located recycling stations and single-stream recycling options. The Aquarium's proactive approach extends to the reduction of single-use plastics, offering biodegradable alternatives such as paper straws and Boxed Water, while phasing out plastic bags and lower-grade plastic toys from its Gift Shop. These collective efforts not only demonstrate the Aquarium's commitment to environmental stewardship but also inspire visitors to adopt sustainable practices in their own lives. In addition, the on-site Wildlife Rescue Center rehabilitates injured marine animals with the goal of returning them to their natural habitats.
American Bank Center Sustainable Practices
The American Bank Center is committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship across all its operations. The venue has implemented a comprehensive recycling program to reduce waste and promote the reuse of materials. Energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems have been installed throughout the facility to minimize energy consumption. Water conservation measures, such as low-flow fixtures and smart irrigation systems, are in place to reduce water usage. The Center also prioritizes the use of eco-friendly products and services, ensuring that its operations have a minimal environmental impact. Additionally, the American Bank Center engages with the local community through educational programs and partnerships aimed at promoting sustainable practices. These efforts reflect the Center’s dedication to reducing its environmental footprint and fostering a culture of sustainability.
