For some batting action, the Corpus Christi Hooks, a Double-A Affiliate of the Houston Astros, and Corpus Christi’s Minor League Baseball team, are definitely worth the watch. The Corpus Christi Ice Rays bring a little cold to the Gulf Coast Capital with their adrenaline packed games on the ice. This professional franchise is part of the North American Hockey League and bring a fresh sport into an unconventional market.

If you’re ready for some football, catch the newest members of the American Football League, and Corpus Christi’s newest sports team, the Corpus Christi Tritons, sporting bay water blue while they battle it out on the indoor field at the American Bank Center. The Corpus Christi Football Club, called The Sharks, is an expansion franchise dedicated to sustainable sports and developing relationships with the community. The Islander Athletics program at TAMUCC is a respected NCAA Division 1 program that offers basketball, volleyball, baseball, and tennis, each one more exciting than the last.  

 

Sporting Venues

The American Bank Center offers 400,000 sq. ft. of versatile space including a multi-purpose arena and convention center, all with stunning views of the bay. National sporting events have graced the 10,000-seat arena, while the convention center encompasses 76,500 sq. ft. of meeting space. For a little outdoor action, the Cabaniss Athletic Complex is a world-class championship venue designed with maximum flexibility to accommodate a large variety of sports and events, including track and field, football, soccer, softball, and more. Bill Witt Park is another multi-sport, ADA compliant location, and has served as the venue for countless little league and soccer games.

The H-E-B Tennis Center offers the ultimate tennis experience with ample space for competitive team tournaments. The 100,997 sq. ft., 10,400 seat Whataburger Field is home to the Corpus Christi Hooks, but also hosts private events year-round. There is plenty of space for large crowds to enjoy a ball game and the warm breeze. Sporting events can also be held on the beach. McGee Beach provides soft sands that accommodate 9 volleyball courts overlooking the Corpus Christi Bay and spectator viewing from the seawall. Just a few steps away, you’ll find the Islander Pavilion, a covered basketball court, and the Great Lawn, which is large enough to accommodate field sports.  

 

Wind and Water Sports

Spending time outdoors on the coast is a natural state of being and Corpus Christi is a prime spot for a variety of water sports. Experience life to the fullest out on the Gulf waters where plenty of sunshine, mild winters, warm summers, multiple inviting bodies of water, and high wind speeds provide the ideal setting for surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, boating, and sailing. Whichever water adventure you choose, the coast will get you there. 

 

Year-Round Sports Events

Corpus Christi holds many city-wide sporting events each year, showcasing our vibrant spirit of athleticism within the community. Among these highly anticipated annual gatherings are the Beach to Bay Relay Marathon, the Conquer the Coast Century Ride, and the Buc Days Corpus Christi Rodeo.

Beach to Bay

Beach to Bay is one of the largest relay marathons in the United States. Runners and fun-seekers from all over the United States come to Corpus Christi to take on this six-leg marathon that totals approximately 26.2 miles of the Gulf Coast beach and pavement, including the JFK Causeway. This has become an annual tradition and boasts an annual registration rate of over 2,000 teams.

Conquer the Coast

Every year, cyclists from the Coastal Bend area, Texas, and beyond make their way to the Gulf Coast Capital for one of the most unique races in Texas. Cyclers can choose from 66-, 21-, and 10-mile rides for a cycling experience that delivers an unforgettable journey through scenic routes and a rewarding experience for riders of all skill levels.

Buc Days Corpus Christi Rodeo

There’s no energy like rodeo energy and every year, Buc Days features the traditional rodeo events including saddle bronc riding, barrel racing, and mutton bustin, and the highly anticipated PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour, a nationally recognized bull riding competition featuring some of the world’s best riders as they go head-to-head with bulls in a live action, adrenaline fueled fight shown live on ESPN.
