Akins began his coaching career in 1951, leading teams across Texas before making a lasting impact at Gregory-Portland High School from 1965 to 1988. Under his guidance, the Wildcats achieved a remarkable 208–51–7 record, securing a state-record 12 consecutive district championships and reaching the state finals in 1971. His overall coaching record stands at 293–102–15, placing him among the most successful coaches in Texas high school football history.

Honors & Recognition

Akins' contributions to high school football have been recognized with inductions into multiple halls of fame, including the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame, the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor, and the Texas Coastal Bend Coaches Association Hall of Honor. In 2005, he received the President Gerald R. Ford All-American High School Coaches Award, highlighting his national impact on the sport.

Beyond the field, Akins was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Battle of Okinawa. His commitment to discipline and excellence influenced not only his players but also his family. His son, Marty Akins, was an All-American quarterback for the Texas Longhorns, and his grandson, Drew Brees, became a Super Bowl-winning NFL quarterback.
