CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – September 22, 2022 – Visit Corpus Christi’s newest initiative, the Corpus Christi Sports Commission is already making strides towards strategic planning and implementation in partnership with the Huddle Up Group, a sports consulting firm helping pave the way for Corpus Christi to become the Gulf Coast Capital for sports. On Thursday, September 22nd, Visit Corpus Christi and the Corpus Christi Sports Commission held a final presentation for the sports tourism strategic plan inclusive of a SWOT analysis, facilities audit, key market findings, and tactical recommendations.

The organization’s short term primary recommendations include affirming the creation of the Corpus Christi Sports Commission, followed by an external focus on key partnerships on the local, regional, and national level, and lastly the development of a regional facilities master plan.

In addition, some of the organization’s long-term secondary recommendations include investment in new sporting venues and capitalizing on already existing venues such as Bill Witt Park and the city’s water assets.

“Corpus Christi has an opportunity to solidify itself as a major player in the sports tourism industry.  In order to do that, we need facilities and infrastructure that can host national level tournaments.  The Huddle Up Group’s recommendations are consistent with our findings and provide direction for responsible expansion.” said Joey Jewell, Executive Director of the Corpus Christi Sports Commission.

Following last month’s launch announcement of the sports commission, Visit Corpus Christi President and CEO Brett Oetting and Corpus Christi Sports Commission Executive Director, Joey Jewell have been working closely with key stakeholders and partners in order to engage and prepare the community for the enriched world class sports ecosystem that is to come. As an end result, the Corpus Christi Sports Commission aims to serve the community by leaving a lasting legacy by driving economic growth and development and enhancing the quality of life for residents through the power of sports tourism.  “This collaboration is very exciting as we work to attract sports tourism to our city,” said Mayor, Paulette Guajardo. “It is time we take our fair share of this $40 billion dollar industry, which will result in a phenomenal economic impact to our community.”
