CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – August 24, 2022 – Visit Corpus Christi made history on Monday, August 22nd as a press conference was held to announce the creation of the Corpus Christi Sports Commission. President and CEO of Visit Corpus Christi, Brett Oetting and Mayor Paulette Guajardo proudly announced Joey Jewell as the new Executive Director for the Corpus Christi Sports Commission at the momentous event and went on to speak on the implementation of the strategic initiatives that will help Corpus Christi move forward as a world-class sports eco-system. This initiative is a part of a three-year plan for the organization, in which Oetting elaborated that sport tourism is a $91 billion dollar a year industry in the United States, and now Corpus Christi is looking to capitalize on its offerings as a sports destination for both land and water sports.  

Mayor Paulette Guajardo emphasized her support for the organization and urged the community to do the same, mentioning that the Corpus Christi Sports Commission would not only facilitate bringing in more sporting events, but will also help local sporting events throughout the city grow.

“We have a unique opportunity in Corpus Christi to market sports very differently because of our natural assets,” said Brett Oetting, President and CEO at Visit Corpus Christi. “Sports tourism is something most locals can relate to as well. The success of the sports tourism in the Gulf Coast Capital will take the entire community to be involved and supportive.” 

Jewell, an Austin native will serve as the head of the sports commission ensuring that the Gulf Coast Capital remains top of mind for sports conferences and sports event planners. Jewell also took the time to publicly announce that the Corpus Christi Sports Commission has begun laying a firm foundation by contracting with the Huddle Up Group, a sports consulting firm that will help advise in the creation of the strategic business plan for the organization. The Huddle Up Group is scheduled to give a final presentation on September 22nd.

We have spent the past few months solidifying the foundation of the Sports Commission and building relationships with key stakeholders. Our focus now is turned towards building our team and creating community aligned sales & marketing strategies that will position us as a significant player in the sports tourism industry. Our partnership with the Huddle Up Group will be instrumental as we continue to evaluate our destination and identify future opportunities.” said Joey Jewell, Executive Director of Corpus Christi Sports Commission.
