Meet Freddie Martinez Jr.
CO-OWNER/CO-PRESIDENT OF FREDDIE RECORDS, & PRODUCER
Freddie Martinez Jr. has spent his life shaped by sound. As a two time Grammy winning and four time Latin Grammy winning producer and engineer, he has helped elevate Latin music while carrying forward the legacy of one of the nation’s leading independent Latin labels, Freddie Records. His story begins in a home filled with music, creativity, and an unwavering work ethic passed down from generations before him. Freddie grew up watching his father, Freddie Martinez Sr., transform a dream and four hundred dollars into a thriving label that would help define the sound of South Texas and beyond. That upbringing created a path that felt less like a choice and more like a calling.
My number one influence has always been my dad, because growing up I could see his career really taking off and I could sense something was building and growing.
From sweeping the warehouse at fourteen to shipping vinyl, tapes, and eventually CDs, Freddie learned the label from the ground up. He picked up the guitar as a teen and began playing on studio projects, but it was the creative energy inside the studio that truly lit his path. After college, he moved to Los Angeles to train as a professional recording engineer and producer, returning home with the skills and determination that would help elevate the label’s production capabilities. As he worked closely with artists, he developed not only technical expertise but also the ability to communicate in the nuanced, intuitive language of creatives.
Today, Freddie serves as Co-Owner and Co-President of Operations, Artist Relations, Producer at Freddie Records. Over time he expanded beyond engineering and production to include the operational side of the business, helping guide the label alongside his brothers John and Mark. Together they continue to honor the family’s legacy while positioning the company for future generations.
For Freddie Records from very humble beginnings has grown into one of the leading Latin indies in the US, and we are very proud of that fact.
His work has earned national and international recognition, including Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards for projects with icons such as Elida Reyna y Avante, Ramón Ayala, and Jimmy Gonzalez y Grupo Mazz. Yet for Freddie, the awards represent more than acclaim. They bring back memories of long sessions, creative breakthroughs, and time spent with artists he deeply respected.
In addition to his decades in the studio and his leadership at Freddie Records, Freddie has also found ways to give back to the community. He previously served on several local and industry boards, including the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Chapter of the Recording Academy. Even though he no longer sits on these boards, they reflect his long commitment to Corpus Christi and to supporting organizations that strengthen the region.
Everything kind of comes back to the music. That is really what I enjoy and what I love to do.
As the industry continues to evolve, Freddie remains focused on adapting, innovating, and maintaining the artist friendly approach that has defined Freddie Records for more than half a century. With new projects planned for 2026 and a continued emphasis on nurturing emerging voices in regional Mexican and other Latin genres, the label’s future remains as dynamic as its past.
To younger musicians and aspiring producers, Freddie offers advice grounded in experience and shaped by over 40 years immersed in music. If you love it, stick with it. Success comes to those who stay committed, build genuine connections, and work relentlessly toward their craft. It is the same dedication that has carried him through his own journey and continues to guide the next chapter of Freddie Records.
