For Captain Mike Morales, fishing has always been more than a pastime. It is a way of life. As the General Manager of Laguna Marina and the owner of Fin Factory Outfitters, Mike has built a career out of sharing his love for the water and the outdoors with others.
“Fishing is fishing whether you're kayak fishing, boat fishing, or wade fishing. At the end of the day it's just about enjoying the outdoors."
His own journey into kayak fishing started back in college. Without the funds for a boat, Mike discovered that kayaks offered an affordable and accessible way to chase the fish just out of reach from the shoreline. What began as necessity quickly became passion. By 2012, he had earned his guide license and launched his own kayak fishing service, diving headfirst into the sport that would shape his future.
Though Mike pursued a corporate career in Dallas after graduating from Texas A&M–Corpus Christi, the call of the coast never let go. He answered, returning to the waters that had always felt like home.
“The saltwater, the fishing, it was just calling me every day. I said one day I am going to come back and make something out of it."
In 2016, Mike opened his first kayak shop in Corpus Christi on a shoestring budget. What started as one location grew into four shops across Texas, fueling a community of anglers eager to experience the sport. Today, through Laguna Marina, Mike and his partners are continuing that mission, revitalizing the space to serve the local fishing community and connect visitors with legendary guides.
For Mike, kayak fishing offers something unique: perspective. On a kayak, you are forced to slow down and really take in the environment. He believes that is what makes anglers more successful, because it teaches them to fish an area thoroughly and with patience.
Corpus Christi, with its rare accessibility and diverse waterways, provides the perfect backdrop for this passion. From the muddy marshes of Nueces Bay to the clear flats of the Laguna Madre, anglers can launch almost anywhere and find adventure.
“People who want to experience Corpus in its totality, you gotta get out there on the water, out here on the flats."
Through his work, Mike Morales is showing just how inviting those waters can be for locals, seasoned anglers, and first-time visitors alike. His story proves that sometimes following your passion leads to building something greater than yourself. And for Mike, that passion continues to ripple across the community like the very waters he calls home.
