Butterfly House

Step inside the 2,600 square-foot screened Butterfly House, where native and migrating butterflies flutter among larval plants and colorful nectar-filled blooms. Species such as the Queen, Painted Lady, and Gulf Fritillary can be seen throughout the garden, with peak sightings occurring from March through November.

Resident Reptiles

The gardens are home to more than 60 resident reptiles, including a non-venomous desert kingsnake, a veiled chameleon, and a New Caledonian crested gecko. Stop by the Reptile Room to meet Ivan the Iguana and his scaly companions while learning about reptile habitats and conservation.

Brennecke Nature Trail

Take a 30-minute walk along the Mary Hope Brennecke Nature Trail to experience South Texas wildlife and vegetation that thrive in the region’s hot, semi-arid climate. The trail leads to the Bird Tower, where peaceful views and potential sightings of Great Egrets or Purple Gallinules await.

Wetland Awareness Boardwalk and Oso Creek Loop Trail

Begin your journey at the Palapa Grande and stroll along the Wetland Awareness Boardwalk, a serene path where you may encounter Roseate Spoonbills or White Pelicans. Pause at the gazebo to take in the scenery before continuing toward the Oso Creek Loop Trail for more wildlife viewing.

Birdiest Festival in America

Each April, the South Texas Botanical Gardens hosts part of the Birdiest Festival in America, a four-day celebration recognizing Corpus Christi as the “Birdiest City in America.” Birders travel from across the country to attend this premier event held at a key Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail site, making it a must for birding and nature enthusiasts.
