Corpus Christi offers an unforgettable year-round birding experience, and with more than 200 species of birds in the area, it has been named the “Birdiest City in America” multiple years in a row by the Coastal Bend Audubon Society. The birds love our gulf beaches as much as we do, including the salt marshes and bays, woodlands, and grasslands. Since these areas are so rich in supply of food options, a variety of species visit throughout the entire year.
For the ultimate birding adventure in the Gulf Coast Capital, we recommend planning your trip around the Birdiest Festival in America which happens in Corpus Christi every April. Experience amazing spring migration along the Texas Gulf Coast in the busiest of U.S. flyways, with several days of keynote speakers, bird tours, workshops, a vendor trade show, and more.
Other popular birding sites:
- Bird Island at Padre Island National Seashore: Birds love the miles of sandy shores at Padre Island. Here, you’ll find gallinules and waders, but watch for Peregrine Falcons during the winter.
- South Texas Botanical Gardens: Find shorebirds, ducks, hummingbirds, grebes and other bird species in over 180 acres of native habitat, natural wetlands, and floral exhibits.
- Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve & Learning Center: From the marsh platform at Oso Bay, you’ll find many native sea birds along with a variety of other bird species, such as cranes, herons, egrets, gulls, spoonbills, sandpipers, and more during the seasonal migration.
- King Ranch: Experience guided wildlife and bird-watching tours at King Ranch and discover an incredibly diverse landscape where you’ll find Northern Bobwhite Quail, Wild Turkey, Ferruginous pygmy-owls, and more.
- Packery Channel Nature Park: This prime birdwatching destination is a Neo-Tropical Migratory Habitat with a birding boardwalk, pavilion, hummingbird and butterfly gardens, as well as bird fountains and drip stations. The park's large, protected oak motte at the entrance is a popular spot for bird enthusiasts.
