One of the perks of a Corpus Christi beach day is being able to drive onto the sand and park close to the water. Depending on where you go, conditions can range from maintained stretches of beach to more remote areas where four-wheel drive is recommended. Here are a few Corpus Christi beaches to consider when beach driving is part of the plan.

Padre Island National Seashore

Padre Island National Seashore offers miles of undeveloped coastline to explore from behind the wheel. Two-wheel-drive vehicles can typically travel along the first five miles of beach, while four-wheel drive is recommended beyond Mile Marker 5 on North and South Beach. Those ready to venture farther can make their way toward Little Shell Beach and Big Shell Beach, remote stretches of shoreline known for beachcombing and a more untouched coastal experience. Conditions can change with tides and weather, so check current beach conditions before heading out, use extra caution around dunes, wildlife, and protected areas, and come prepared for the drive.

Padre Balli Park

Beach Permit Required

Padre Balli Park offers beach driving along miles of North Padre Island shoreline, with maintained beach extending to around Access Road 6 at Mile Marker 235. Beyond that point, beach maintenance ends and a 4x4 vehicle is recommended for visitors continuing farther down the coast. It’s a good option for travelers who want to explore beyond the maintained stretch while staying within the Padre Balli Park area.

North Packery Channel Beach | J.P. Luby

Beach Permit Required

North Packery Channel Beach, locally known as J.P. Luby, is known for packed sand that makes this stretch of shoreline easy to explore by vehicle. Drive onto the beach, find a spot near the water, and settle in for the day along one of Corpus Christi’s most active watersports areas. Once you park, surfing, kiteboarding, wakeboarding, and jet skiing offer plenty of ways to trade four wheels for time on the Gulf.

Beach Parking Permits

Planning to park right on the sand? A $12 beach parking permit is required for vehicles parked along designated sections of Whitecap Beach, North Packery Beach/J.P. Luby, and Padre Balli Park. Permits are valid for the calendar year and can be purchased at locations throughout Corpus Christi, while off-beach parking does not require a permit.
