In the summer of 2006, William Durrill opened Brewster Street Icehouse in downtown Corpus Christi, transforming a former warehouse near Whataburger Field into a place where great food, live music, and family fun could come together under one roof. Inspired by his own young family, he envisioned a gathering place where parents could relax, kids could play, and visitors of all ages would feel welcome.
Today, Brewster Street is one of Corpus Christi's most beloved gathering places. As the restaurant celebrates its 20th anniversary, we look back at the vision that started it all and the impact it continues to have on the Coastal Bend.
The story of Brewster Street begins long before the first burger was served, or the first concert took the stage. For years, the Durrill family invested in the SEA District, owning warehouse properties throughout an area that would eventually become one of downtown Corpus Christi's most active entertainment hubs. After the opening of Concrete Street Amphitheater and the construction of Whataburger Field, William saw an opportunity to create something that downtown was missing.
The original idea was simple: create a casual spot where fans could grab a burger and a cold drink before or after a Corpus Christi Hooks game. But as a young father, he envisioned something more than a traditional sports bar. With Whataburger Field drawing families downtown, he wanted a place where parents could relax while kids had room to play, creating an atmosphere that felt welcoming to guests of all ages. What began as a game-day concept centered around burgers, hot dogs, pizza, and beer quickly evolved into a destination built around food, family, and fun. That family-first approach became the foundation of Brewster Street Icehouse.
When the restaurant opened in June 2006, it did so on a memorable day. A record-setting crowd filled Whataburger Field as baseball legend Roger Clemens made a rehabilitation appearance with the Hooks. The energy surrounding downtown created the perfect backdrop for Brewster Street's debut, introducing visitors and locals alike to a new gathering place in the heart of Corpus Christi.
Over the next two decades, Brewster Street grew alongside downtown Corpus Christi, evolving into one of the city's most recognizable venues for live music, community events, and family entertainment. National touring artists, rising Texas musicians, and local performers have all taken the stage, helping Brewster Street build a reputation that extends far beyond the Coastal Bend. Artists such as Parker McCollum, Koe Wetzel, and Turnpike Troubadours performed at Brewster Street early in their careers, long before they were filling arenas and headlining major festivals. Along the way, countless birthday parties, family dinners, concert nights, and celebrations have created memories for generations of guests.
Today, Brewster Street remains a place where visitors can experience a little bit of everything that makes Corpus Christi special. On any given day, you'll find families enjoying the playground, friends gathering for lunch, baseball fans heading to a Hooks game, or concertgoers filling the venue for a night of live music.
While the downtown location remains the heart of the Brewster Street story, its success eventually inspired new chapters. Today, William's daughter, Avery Durrill, helps continue the vision that began two decades ago, carrying forward the same commitment to hospitality, entertainment, and community that helped make Brewster Street a local favorite.
In 2019, Brewster Street expanded to the Southside, bringing the same welcoming atmosphere, family-friendly environment, and community-focused spirit to one of Corpus Christi's fastest-growing neighborhoods. More recently, Brewster Street opened its Padre Island location, fulfilling a long-held vision of creating a waterfront destination where guests can continue enjoying the food and drinks they know and love alongside coastal views.
Each location offers its own unique experience, but all three share the same commitment to hospitality, entertainment, and bringing people together.
As Brewster Street Icehouse celebrates 20 years in downtown Corpus Christi, the milestone represents more than the anniversary of a restaurant. It is a celebration of the vision that transformed a warehouse into a community gathering place, the countless memories made along the way, and the generations of locals and visitors who have made Brewster Street part of their Corpus Christi story.
