Planning a beach trip to the Gulf Coast Capital? Just because you are in a wheelchair doesn't mean you can't enjoy the soft sands along the Texas coast. This beach guide has everything you need to know to enjoy the beaches of Corpus Christi.

Beaches with Accessibility Accommodations

Beach Wheelchair Rentals

Beach wheelchairs can be found at the lifeguard stands of beaches. All you need to do to rent one of these chairs is to provide a valid photo id & your contact information. You can also call Parks & Recreation at (361) 826-3469 for a beach wheelchair rental.

Padre Island National Seashore Wheelchair Rentals

Beach wheelchairs are available for rent at the Padre Island National Seashore at the Malaquite Beach Visitor Center. There are 5 chairs available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Each beach wheelchair is different so be sure to listen to the rules regarding each chair. For more peace of mind, be sure to call the visitor ahead of time at (361) 949-8068.

Some helpful rules to remember prior to renting are these beach wheelchairs have a weight capacity of 350lbs, they must be returned by 4:30 p.m. on the day of rental, you must provide a driver's license or personal wheelchair to have on hold during use of a rented beach wheelchair, beach wheelchairs are not designed to float so they should not be taken in deep waters, and these chairs are specifically designed for use by mobility challenged individuals on Malaquite Beach only.

Do you use a wheelchair or other mobility aid and stress over making travel plans? I am here to help and provide you with a wide variety of accessible travel tips before your outdoor adventure in the Gulf Coast Capital. These tips will include accessible restaurants, restaurants…

Beaches with Sidewalks & Ramps

McGee Beach is in the heart of downtown located on the seawall on Corpus Christi Bay. There is a 1.5-mile-long stretch of sidewalk up and down the seawall where you can stroll from the restaurants in the Marina, hotels along Shoreline Dr. and famous attractions like Selena's Mirador de la Flor. BF Rentals offers shade umbrellas, cabanas, and chairs for rent on McGee Beach. You can contact BF Rentals by calling (361) 813-3636 for all of your beach necessities.

Michael J. Ellis Beach & Seawall is another wonderful beach to spend the day at as a wheelchair user. This gulf beach on North Padre Island also offers a long stretch of sidewalk, a ramp down to the sand, and wonderful beach wheelchairs that roll right on the sand and into the water. Many people like to jog and run on the sidewalk along this beach but it would be a great place for you to wheel along, too!

Both beaches offer free parking but come early on those beautiful summer days because the parking spots fill up fast.

Traveling while in a wheelchair or using a mobility aid can be stressful, but it should also be enjoyable. Be careful, be safe, but most of all, have fun!
