The History of Old Bayview Cemetery

Back to Top of List

Established in 1845, Old Bayview Cemetery is the oldest federal military cemetery in Texas. Its history began following a boiler explosion aboard the steamship Dayton on September 13, 1845, which killed seven soldiers. Col. H.L. Kinney, the founder of Corpus Christi, provided land for their burial, and the first interment took place the following day. Over time, the cemetery became the final resting place for veterans of several wars, early settlers, and community leaders who helped shape Corpus Christi. Today, Old Bayview Cemetery remains an important part of the city's history, preserving the stories of those who lived and served in South Texas. Learn more about its origins and notable burials in Uncovering the History of the Old Bayview Cemetery in Corpus Christi.
