Signature Corpus Christi Experiences
Back to Top of ListStep Aboard the USS Lexington Museum
Explore a piece of naval history aboard the USS Lexington Museum, the WWII-era aircraft carrier permanently docked on Corpus Christi Bay. Nicknamed the “Blue Ghost,” the Lexington is the oldest remaining Essex-class aircraft carrier in the world and gives visitors the chance to explore 100,000 square feet across 11 decks and five self-guided routes, making it easy to spend the better part of a day aboard the ship. Explore historic spaces and interactive exhibits, learn about generations of servicewomen through the Women of the Navy exhibit, take on an onboard escape room, experience an F/18 training mission in the flight simulator, or catch a show in the 3D MEGA Theater. The flight deck itself is one of the highlights, pairing the aircraft collection with some of the best views aboard the ship. For an even deeper look at the Blue Ghost, guided experiences include Flight Operations and Hard Hat tours, along with Paranormal Investigations that explore the stories and unexplained activity reported aboard the ship.
Explore Padre Island National Seashore
Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) protects 70 miles of coastline along Padre Island, the longest barrier island in the world, and represents the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world. The national seashore encompasses more than 130,000 acres of beaches, dunes, grasslands, and tidal flats, with much of the coastline accessible by driving directly on the beach. Visitors can camp along the Gulf, fish, bird, beachcomb, explore the Grasslands Nature Trail, or drive south to experience miles of undeveloped Texas coastline. PINS also protects important habitat for wildlife, including the endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle. The national seashore leads conservation and recovery efforts for the species, and during nesting season, public hatchling releases may give visitors the opportunity to watch newly hatched turtles make their way to the Gulf. Beachcombers can search for shells and other Gulf treasures along Little Shell Beach and Big Shell Beach, while younger visitors can learn more about the park through ranger-led programs and educational camps offered for kids.
Go Birding in America’s Birdiest City
You can go birding around the world, but Corpus Christi earned the title “Birdiest City in America” for 10 consecutive years. Located along the Central Flyway, the area welcomes more than 200 species throughout the year, with beaches, wetlands, grasslands, and woodlands creating diverse birding habitats. Spring migration is an especially exciting time to visit, and each April, the Birdiest Festival in America celebrates it with guided trips, workshops, presentations, and other birding experiences.
Experience Selena’s Legacy
Corpus Christi is the hometown of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez and is home to several landmarks dedicated to the Queen of Tejano. Visit the Selena Museum at Q-Productions to see her stage costumes, awards, red Porsche, and other memorabilia, then stop at Mirador de la Flor, the waterfront memorial featuring a life-size bronze statue of Selena. Other Selena-related locations can be found throughout Corpus Christi, including her star on the South Texas Music Walk of Fame. The Ultimate Selena Guide to Corpus Christi provides more places connected to Selena’s life, career, and legacy throughout the city.
Explore North Padre Island in a Moke
Rent an electric Moke from Gulf Coast Mokes for a different way to explore North Padre Island. Originally created in 1959 as a utility vehicle for the British Army, Mokes later became popular as beach buggies before being redesigned and reintroduced in the U.S. as electric vehicles in 2017. Gulf Coast Mokes is the first company to offer Moke rentals in Corpus Christi, with colorful, open-air vehicles that are Texas licensed and permitted on packed beach sand.
Visit the World’s Only Two-Story Whataburger
Whataburger may be a Texas favorite, but it got its start right here in Corpus Christi. Downtown’s Whataburger by the Bay is the only two-story Whataburger in the world, giving fans a distinctly Corpus Christi way to experience the homegrown burger chain. Head upstairs to the open-air dining area for a bird’s-eye view of Corpus Christi Bay, the marina, and the Downtown seawall while enjoying your Whataburger favorites, then check out the bronze statue of founder Harmon Dobson and onsite merchandise.
Catch a Game at Whataburger Field
Whataburger Field is home to the Corpus Christi Hooks, the Double-A Texas League affiliate of the Houston Astros. Since the Hooks began playing in Corpus Christi in 2005, the team has served as a stop in the Astros player development system, giving fans the opportunity to watch future Major League players before they reach Houston. José Altuve played 35 games with the Hooks in 2011 before being called directly from Corpus Christi to the Astros at age 21. The ballpark also hosts Astros players during rehabilitation assignments, giving Corpus Christi fans opportunities to see established Major League players play alongside the organization’s developing prospects.
Corpus Christi Original Events
Back to Top of ListChicken Shiz Bingo
Bingo works differently at The Annex. On the last Sunday of each month, the woman-owned, automotive-themed Corpus Christi bar hosts Chicken Shiz Bingo, where participants purchase cash-only squares that are distributed first-come, first-served and in random order. A chicken is released onto the numbered playing area, and if it does its business on your square, you win. Prizes can reach up to $240, and events often include drink specials, local food pop-ups, and support for area animal rescues.
Rotten Tomato Tuesdays
Every Tuesday from 10 p.m. to midnight, Old Kress Live puts its own spin on karaoke with Rotten Tomato Tuesdays. Instead of choosing a song, participants spin a wheel to determine what they have to sing and then take the stage while the crowd gets in on the fun. The weekly Downtown Corpus Christi event turns traditional karaoke into an unpredictable competition where not knowing what you’ll have to perform is part of the point. With the song left entirely up to the wheel, every performance comes with an element of surprise for both the singer and the crowd.
Jazz at PKK
First Friday Jazz Night adds another live music stop to the first Friday of the month at PKK Southern Cuisine in Downtown Corpus Christi. From 6 to 9 p.m., the restaurant hosts live jazz alongside its Southern-inspired menu and handcrafted cocktails. Pair it with First Friday ArtWalk to experience two recurring Downtown Corpus Christi events in one evening.
Lucy's Lounge
Every Thursday, Lucy’s Snackbar extends into the evening with a weekly night centered on wine, food, and music. From 7 to 10 p.m., guests can order wine by the glass and items from Lucy’s evening menu while listening to music from DJ Jello Shot, owner of Hybrid Records. The weekly event gives visitors a different way to experience Lucy’s, transforming the daytime café into an evening wine and music spot once a week.
Friday Night Game Night at Adelphos
Adelphos Coffee Roasters keeps the doors open late every Friday for Game Night at The Foundry. From 6 to 9 p.m., guests can bring their own board games or card games, grab a drink, and play with friends inside the shared Downtown Corpus Christi space. The bring-your-own-game format means the lineup changes every week, from familiar favorites to whatever someone decides to pull out and teach the table.
From one-of-a-kind attractions and local traditions to events that put a Corpus Christi spin on a night out, there are plenty of ways to experience something different on the coast. Explore more things to do in Corpus Christi, check the events calendar for what’s happening during your visit, and sign up for the newsletter to stay updated on upcoming events, local experiences, and more unique happenings along the coast.
