Michael J. Ellis Beach & Seawall

Beach Permit Required (for parking on beach)

Michael J. Ellis Beach & Seawall makes getting from the car to the coast simple, especially for families hauling chairs, coolers, and plenty of beach gear. Wheelchair-accessible ramps connect the seawall directly to the sand, while free paved parking is available in the Windward Lot. You will need a beach parking permit if you park on the beach, but no permit is required to use the paved parking. Restrooms are close by, mobile lifeguards patrol the shoreline, and the wide stretch of sand gives kids plenty of room for sandcastles and a full day of playing by the water. Right off the beach, Sandbox Beach Bar adds even more family-friendly fun with food trucks, a playground, pickleball and sand volleyball courts, live music, and plenty of space to hang out overlooking the Gulf.

Whitecap Beach

Beach Permit Required

For families who want a classic day on the Gulf, Whitecap Beach keeps the focus on sand, water, and plenty of room to settle in. The beach is close to rental vendors, restaurants, and beachfront hotels, giving families convenient options nearby without taking away from the laid-back beach experience. Stand lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with mobile lifeguards patrolling the beach throughout the rest of the year, adding another family-friendly feature to this popular Padre Island beach.

McGee Beach

Set along the downtown seawall, McGee Beach is an easy pick for families looking for a relaxed beach day close to the city. Calm, seaweed-free bay water and manicured sand make it especially inviting for families with younger kids. The beach is ADA accessible, with free parking along Shoreline Boulevard, restrooms, and rental options nearby. Beach Parking Permits

Planning to park right on the sand? A $12 beach parking permit is required for vehicles parked along designated sections of Whitecap Beach, North Packery Beach/J.P. Luby, and Padre Balli Park. Permits are valid for the calendar year and can be purchased at locations throughout Corpus Christi, while off-beach parking does not require a permit.
