Try Kiteboarding with a Local Guide

There is no better time or place to learn a water sport than when on vacation in Corpus Christi and you can jump right in and take on kiteboarding! Professional kiteboarder Jeff Howard owns and operates his own business in the Bayfront area and offers 3-hour beginner lessons, hourly refresher courses, and advanced courses for adventurers of all skill levels.

Once you get the hang of the sport, you can purchase gear from the shop so you can hit the waves and the water whenever you want. Jeff and his staff work closely with several manufacturers of kite equipment and accessories. When you’re ready to hit the ground (or the water) running with this sport, you’ll receive a free lesson with the purchase of a complete current year model kite package.

See the Coast by Kayak

If you’re looking for something a little more laid back and low-key, kayaking still requires a certain skill level but can be a peaceful activity for a group or a couple to enjoy. The owner is certified by the American Canoe Association & Texas Parks and Wildlife and is the professional kayaking tour guide and instructor who will show you the ropes. Coastal Bend Kayaking offers courses for beginner, intermediate and advanced-level paddlers along with refresher courses and even parent-child kayaking fishing classes.

Sign up for Surf Camp

If you have always wanted to learn how to surf, you’re in the right place. This surf camp located on Padre Island offers private lessons, full-day and 5-day camps to any and all interested in learning how to surf. All the equipment you’ll need is included and they operate on a 4:1 surfer/instruction ratio for the best learning experience.

Before heading out onto the water though, all campers must take the “Core Class,” a crash course on the basics of safety while surfing. Campers are split into groups depending on their skill level, so if you’ve never been on a surfboard in your life or if you’ve dabbled in the water sport a little in the past, you’ll never feel overwhelmed during your lessons. Grab the whole gang and get ready to hang ten!

Test Your Skills with Windsurfing

Located in Padre Island National Seashore at Bird Island Basin, it’s one of the top windsurfing sites on the US mainland. Worldwinds Windsurfing offers classes at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels as well as a freestyle series for the daredevil in you. If this is your first foray into windsurfing, group beginner lessons are one hour long, but then you’ll take to the water to put your new skills to the test for two additional hours afterward.

No need to bring your own equipment as you can rent whatever you need. However, if you do have your own, feel free to use it. Although the scenery is breathtaking and it’s the perfect spot for learning the sport, you will need to purchase a National Park pass to get to the location for $10 per week or $20 per year.

For those up for a little adventure while on vacation, these pros are ready and willing to get you out on the water and having a blast.
